Time to upgrade your computer memory (RAM)

If your computer is running slowly, one relatively affordable and easy way to improve this is to upgrade the RAM.

Sometimes this can make all the difference in the world to the performance of your computer and give it those extra years of life you need.

So what is RAM?

RAM stands for Random Access Memory. It's the part of your computer that's used by the CPU (Central Processing Unit) and other components to quickly "park" and retrieve information. The more RAM a computer has and the faster the RAM is, the better the computer will operate. There are limits to this depending on your computer and how it's used, but that's the general rule. Sometimes people confuse their computer’s hard drive (or hard disk) with its RAM because they're both types of memory. The best way to think of this is: RAM is the fast memory a computer works with to do it's "number crunching"; the hard drive is the place where it stores photos, emails and installed programs, even when it’s switched off.

So what kind of number crunching do computers use RAM for?

The answer is everything from figuring out how to open email and display it, to where your mouse cursor is on the screen and much more.

Unfortunately many companies and people who sell computers don't put enough memory in them.

Sometimes this can even mean you might need to remove and discard some of the memory modules already in the computer in order to upgrade it.

What kind of memory should you use?

There are several different types of RAM available. The design of your computer determines the type of RAM you need. It's very easy to buy the wrong type and find that it just won't fit in, or that it fits but it's not compatible with your computer. So if your computer is running slowly and you don't know the difference between DIMM and SO-DIMM, its required MHz or its MB or GB, whether you want DDR2 or DDR3, then call us and we'll help you upgrade your memory and you'll have the peace of mind that you're getting the upgrade most suitable for your PC and your budget.
